It's horrible -- an earthquake near the capital of the poorest nation in the world: Haiti. Estimates range from 45,000 to 50,000 dead, thousands injured, and so much aid rushing in that the congestion is preventing dispersal and needed assistance. A terrible thought crossed my mind last night. One so heartless, callus, extremely sad -- but possibly true. What if, in the long run, this earthquake proves to actually be beneficial to Haiti? With so many dead and so much destruction, how can one contemplate that it might be for the best in the larger picture? Cruel!
In my sociology class we recently (last week) discussed the six major sources of social change. One of them is the physical environment and one of the sub-categories is natural disasters. With all the aid, resources/supplies, and money heading toward Haiti, the poorest country in the world might be able to build a strong political and economic foundation (ie. social structure) that may eventually guide the nation to greater prosperity and out of the depths of despair and poverty. ~God willing, let it be so.
