American Made

Finished reading Kelsey Timmerman's book, "Where Am I Wearing?" This book is about his exploits into the factories where our clothes are made and into the lives of the people who make our clothes. Very eye opening! And depressing! (If you have a conscience and can feel guilt and compassion.) Basically, garment/clothing companies have left the U.S. and gone to the countries that have the cheapest labor force. That's another way of saying that they have the most desperate people who'll work however long is required for the lowest pay imaginable. There's little to no job security and few labor laws. Just what the garment factories desire. There are some unions and organizations that have fought to limit sweatshops and curtail child labor, but these things still happen, along with corruption & bribery.

Kelsey is coming to my government classes tomorrow to speak to my students about his quest that took him to Honduras, Bangladesh, Cambodia, and China. He's also going to share the answers he found to the tough questions he posed. Kelsey is from the Midwest, having graduated from Mississinaw Valley H.S. (Union City, OH) and Miami University (Oxford, OH). He currently resides in Muncie, Indiana, with his family. You can find more about him and this issue at his website, whereamiwearing.com. Check it out!
